After spending the last few years building, scaling, investing, and advising companies in different roles, from Product Leader to Founder and CEO or Angel Investor, some things have become apparent to me on what makes a startup or scale-up more or less successful.

You always have the obvious ones, such as market and timing. However, those are primarily external factors you can’t control. Out of the intrinsic ones, Speed of Execution is probably the most critical. Moreover, the absolute best companies are moving incredibly fast and in the right direction (or at least pivoting to the correct one quickly), perfectly balancing speed with quality.

In this article, we will explore why speed matters so much for young businesses, share some tips on why it is vital to move fast without sacrificing quality and give some advice, learned the hard way, on executing quickly and well. Let’s dive in!

# What are some of the benefits of a high Speed of Execution?
Moving quickly and executing violently brings some massive benefits. Among those, some of the most important are the following:
- **Capturing market opportunities:** when you move quickly, you can take advantage of market opportunities before others. This is super important, especially in a fast-changing industry or marketplace. Speed lets you stay ahead of the game, allowing you to uncover your customers’ pain points faster and be the first to launch new products or services to solve those problems.
- **Learning and adapting at lightning speed:** fast execution allows you to make improvements and adjustments as needed by testing your ideas and getting customer feedback. That way, you’ll stay relevant and responsive to the market or at least be able to identify and capitalize on pivoting opportunities swiftly.
- **Stronger Branding:** you can build and establish a reputation for innovation and responsiveness, attracting more customers, partners, investors, and even better talent to help you grow faster.
- **Outpacing your competitors:** It goes without saying, but this is critical. Speed of execution allows you to stay ahead of your competitors. When you move faster, it’s often harder for others to catch up or copy your success.

Now that we’ve gone through some of the benefits of a high Speed of Execution, let’s discuss when and why balancing Speed with Quality is imperative.

# So when should you focus all your energy on executing as fast as possible?
To figure out how to and how much to balance Speed and Quality, you first need to understand the product space and marketplace where you want to operate.

For example, let’s say you are creating a new marketplace. You are the **market originator** (extremely rare nowadays). In that case, **go full-throttle on speed** and don’t worry too much about quality, as long as you are not creating significant liabilities and risks to you and your customers.

That said, nowadays, it is progressively more challenging to find new markets to explore. So you always end up competing with more or less established incumbents, directly or indirectly.

In that case, taking a more balanced approach is likely advised, constantly pushing to **move fast as the primary goal but maintaining quality**. That is especially true for industries where trust-building is a must. Industries such as Health Tech, Finance, or Privacy Tech. (Believe me, after spending the last few years building and launching in Privacy Tech.)

## Now, assuming that you, like 99% of new businesses, will end up operating in a competitive marketplace. Why is it so critical to balance Speed and Quality?
- **Ensuring strategic alignment:** Your efforts must align with your overall business strategy and Northstar. This will help you stay focused on your goals and make the right decisions, even when things are moving quickly.
- **The risks of moving too quickly:** Although speed is essential, moving faster than needed can lead to unnecessary mistakes such as poor planning or low-quality products. Finding the right balance between moving fast and ensuring your work is top-notch is vital. With that said, never strive for perfection. If you do so, you never launch anything.
- **Prioritizing Tasks and Projects:** To balance speed and quality, focus on what matters most. Prioritize the tasks and projects that will impact your business the most, and avoid getting bogged down in minor details or releases with limited impact.
- **Maintaining product quality:** Make sure your products and services are high-quality. Even if you’re moving fast, always strive for what makes your business stand out and strive to delight your users and consumers. Long live the Minimum Lovable Product!

# So what are some strategies you can implement to Increase your Speed of Execution without losing sight of Quality?
- **Building a High-performance Team:** This one is easier said than done (trust me). Pulling it off can take a long time, but hiring the right people is crucial for swift execution. First, look for talented and senior individuals to build out your core team. Moreover, gauge if they share your vision and are eager to make things happen. Finally, once you’ve got a great team, foster a culture of ownership and accountability so everyone is motivated to do their best.
- **Choosing the correct development methodology:** Another critical factor, at least when your company is building digital products (my expertise). Even though Agile is still all the rage nowadays, there might be a better methodology for you. Remember you want to move fast and consistently launch value-added features/products. With that in mind, Agile can actually be the correct methodology for you and your team. However, many times, it isn’t, and you end up putting your product teams in a rat wheel of continuous delivery, bug cleaning, and QA just because. I, for instance, have been using ShapeUp with async and senior remote teams in fast-moving organizations for the past few years, and speed to value hasn’t been compromised even though cycles are way longer than sprints in agile. Find out what works best for you, your product, and your team!
- **Outsource:** Finding great partners in areas you don’t master or need to augment can be a fantastic way to move faster and gain a significant advantage in the marketplace while keeping high-quality standards. - **Streamlining decision-making processes:** You need to make decisions quickly to move quickly. Delegate authority and trust your team to make decisions on their own. When the game didn’t take off, the team pivoted to create a team collaboration tool using the communication platform they had developed for the game. By adapting quickly, they turned Slack into the powerhouse it is today.
